KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) deployed 28 teams to photograph road users committing offences during their Hari Raya Aidilfitri Op this year.

The 15-day nationwide operation, which started on Friday, will see the teams focusing on seven serious offences — overtaking at double lines, driving on emergency lanes, talking on the phone while driving, running red lights, not wearing helmets, not using seat belts and jumping queues.

RTD director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said undercover officers would take photos of road users committing the offences, and the department would then send a notice to the driver. "The road users involved will be investigated, before summonses are issued," he told reporters when met at a joint-operation at the Duta - Ulu Kelang Expressway, here, last night. Ismail said the department had also deployed 75 undercover teams to monitor bus drivers.

He said officers would randomly board buses to their destinations, and note the driver's offences. "If they break the law, we will issue summonses on the spot. "Besides undercover operations, we also sent teams to check on condition of buses and drivers at 30 bus terminals and 24 depots nationwide," he said. On last night's roadblock, Ismail said RTD issued 170 summonses for various offences.

The operation also saw 10 men, including a bus driver, nabbed by the National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) when they were tested positive for drugs. City Nada Intelligence and Operation chief Mohd Kamal Khandies said the suspects are aged between 19 and 30, and seven of them were tested positive for Methamphetamine while the rest were caught for ganja abuse.

Two taxis were also seized by the Land Transport Commission when checks revealed that their drivers were not licensed to operate the vehicles.
