PUTRAJAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has commended the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) on the criminal charges on three policemen involved in the custodial death of a suspect detained in Kota Tinggi, Johor in November 2014. "We submitted our findings in October 2015 where we announced that the death of Syed Mohd Azlan Syed Mohamed Nur had elements of physical violence," EAIC chairman Datuk Yaacob Md Sam said in a press statement today. "In accordance with the provisions of Section 30(1)(c) of the EAIC Act 2009, the commission recommended to the Public Prosecutor (Attorney General) that criminal charges be brought against the policemen found to have committed the criminal offence," he added. He said the three policemen were charged under Section 304 (b) for causing death at the Kota Tinggi Sessions Court last Aug 16. If found guilty, the three face a 10-year jail term and fine, or both. Syed Mohd Azlan was arrested by police near Pengerang, Johor, over possible involvement in an armed altercation involving two groups on Sept 14, 2014. He was reportedly detained by a team of 13 police officers and held at the Sungai Rengit police station, where he was interrogated over the attack. Syed Mohd Azlan was later transferred to the Kota Tinggi district police headquarters to be remanded, but died while in detention. The public can access the EAIC full report at www.eaic.gov.my.
