BUKIT MERTAJAM: Accident cases under Ops Selamat in the northern region have recorded a drop but the number of fatal crashes have increased.
Northern Zone operations chief Supt Ahmad Adnan Baris said there were 2,154 accidents during the 11-day operations compared to 2,201 cases in the 2015 operation.
He however noted there were 35 fatal accidents this year compared to last year where 33 cases were recorded.
He said those involved in the fatal accidents were motorcyclists and none involved car drivers.
Ahmad Adnan added that police have issued 13,636 compounds during the operation compared to 17,733 summonses issued last year.
He said of those issued, 7,479 compounds were issued to offences occurring in Penang.
He also warned those who flaunted traffic laws will not only endanger themselves but other road users as well.
"We will take immediate action by issuing compounds on the spot to those speeding, driving on emergency lanes and using mobiles while driving," he said in media briefing today.
Ops Selamat is the annual police operation to ensure safe highway conditions with this the operation this year beginning on June 29 until July 13.
