The organiser of the gathering as well as the lorry driver are being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
PETALING JAYA: Police have summoned the organiser of a protest seeking justice for the lorry driver who was recently assaulted by several men in Ampang.
Also to be questioned is Nasrul Faiz Zulfahmi, the lorry driver, and two other Ikhlas members.
They are being probed under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).
Small and Medium Scale Entrepreneurs Association of Malaysia (Ikhlas) president Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah said he had been told to present himself at the Serdang police headquarters for questioning.
“I received the call (from the police) two days ago in connection with Ikhlas’ protest last weekend,†he said.
Ridzuan said he did not understand why the police were using the PAA on him.“I was not trying to be a gangster or trying to topple the government. I only wanted to help people. But whatever it is, we will cooperate with the police,†he said.
Over the weekend, more than 200 lorry drivers and Ikhlas members had gathered in Sungai Besi to protest against the attack on Nasrul, who was also present.
Serdang district police chief Megat Mohd Aminuddin Megat Alias confirmed that Ridzuan and Nasrul had been summoned to record their statements in relation to the protest.
“We just want to know the purpose of the gathering and to record their statements,†he told FMT.
During the protest, Nasrul told reporters the attack had left him with bruises and a gash on his neck requiring 13 stitches.
The video of Nasrul being pinned to the ground and beaten by four men went viral on social media.
Police have arrested five men in connection with the attack. The suspects are being investigated for rioting.
