KUALA NERUS: Police have mobilised 3,428 officers and personnel to assist and control the situation at flooded areas in Terengganu.

State police chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said police were working closely with other agencies in the rescue and evacuation operations of flood victims.

He said district police chiefs were also alerted to conduct patrol and monitoring at flood-prone areas.

“We are on full alert with all equipment and logistics ready to face any eventuality,” he told reporters after visiting SK Kompleks Gong Badak here yesterday.

A Form One student in Setiu became the first fatality in Terengganu since floods began Monday.

In Kuala Terengganu, several main roads in three districts in Terengganu were closed to traffic after being inundated by 0.3m to 1m of water.

A Public Works Department operations spokesman said Kuala Terengganu was the worst district affected where five roads were closed as of 3pm yesterday.

In Marang, the ramp to enter the East Coast Highway at Bukit Pyong was closed when it was inundated by 0.4m of water while the road from Kuala Berang to Sungai Tong near Kampung Kuala Ping, Hulu Terengganu was also closed to all traffic due to floods.

Terengganu JKR director Datuk Shafii Mohamad said the department was monitoring all main roads in the state and were also repairing those critically damaged.

“The people are also advised to observe all signages on alternative routes in the areas,” he said.

In Kuala Nerus, the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination centre at SMK Padang Kemunting was closed after the main road to the school was disconnected due to rising water level.

Terengganu state education director Zakaria Hussin said more than 100 SPM candidates at the examination centre now have to sit for the examination at SMK Tengku Mizan Zainal Abidin located near the school.
