KU ALA LUMPUR: Diesel smugglers like to use illegal jetties in Johor and bases along the border of Kelantan to load fuel onto small boats. “We suspect that these small boats then transfer the fuel to larger vessels,” said Federal Marine Police commander Seni or Asst Comm Datuk Abdul Aziz Yusof. He added that the marine police were working together with the Domestic Trade, Co - operatives and Consumerism Ministry to cripple these syndicates. SAC Abdul Aziz said random checks on these hot spots were conducted to catch syndicate members. “Our efforts can be more successful if we are given proper intelligence. “We need the locals to be our eyes and ears. “With information, we can conduct smart deployment of assets to intercept these syndicates while they are in our territorial waters,” he said at a press conference yesterday. Between January and May, he said marine police seized items totalling RM73.3mil. A big portion were items scheduled under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 (RM65.5mil). Resources : The Star
