I REFER to the report “Cops tried to cover up death” (The Star, April 29). It is heart-wrenching to read of the inhumane treatment Dharmendran went through while in police custody. As an ordinary senior citizen, I may not know or understand the severity of the crime he committed but I know that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Surely there must be more humane ways that could have been used to get him to tell the truth.

I can imagine the pain that was inflicted on him by the five police personnel. Could anyone have survived that? Something must be done to specify how a suspect can be treated when in custody to prevent such tragic deaths in future.

Some may not feel the way I do but to me he was somebody’s son, somebody’s husband, or perhaps somebody’s father.

Let this case be an example. We are talking about human beings here, not animals. Please also ensure that CCTV systems are installed and in perfect working condition so that those concerned will be aware that they too are being monitored and will think twice before venting their anger and frustration on suspects under interrogation.
