The party wants action against Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan for making a police report ‘based on assumptions’ against top trio.

KUALA LUMPUR: The DAP has urged Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar to act against Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun for making a police report against three personalities for allegedly conspiring to overthrow Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Khalid had since dismissed the report as being “based on assumptions”.

Speaking to reporters outside Dang Wangi police headquarters Monday, Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng stressed that citizens were not allowed to make baseless police reports, and that they were liable to punishment for doing so.

He said the law should apply equally to everyone who made baseless allegations or false police reports.

Zulhazmi Shariff, a DAP lawyer, said it was clear that Khairul’s report was a betrayal of the three top government personalities.Khairul had made a police report last month alleging the outgoing Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Abu Kassim Mohamed, former Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and former Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail were involved in a conspiracy to topple Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“It is a heavy accusation. As the IGP said it was based on assumptions, he cannot be prejudiced and have double standards and not take action (against Khairul).

“Making false reports is against the law. We are all Malaysian citizens; we don’t want the public to perceive that just because he is an Umno Youth official, he gets special treatment,” said Zulhazmi.

Former Selangor state executive councillor Ronnie Liu, who was also present, feared that other Umno youth members may “follow in Khairul’s footsteps” and make false police reports.
