Lim Lip Eng says the two suspects arrested for car theft should not have been released by the police on July 28.

MP wants police to arrest Lamborghini carjackers

KUALA LUMPUR: An MP has challenged the police to apprehend, within 48 hours, those involved with a purported carjacking of a Lamborghini Gallardo sports car.

Otherwise, he will report the case to the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission on Monday.

Lim Lip Eng, MP for Segambut, said the police should not have released the two suspected perpetrators who had been arrested on July 28 for the car theft. The two suspects were said to be “Datuks”.

Lim said that anyone caught for vehicle theft, even for a motorcycle, could face a six-month prison term.

Serdang district police chief Megat Mohd Aminuddin Megat Alias had said the car was found near the Rawang toll plaza at 8pm, followed by the arrest of a 52-year-old man at a restaurant in Jalan Radin Bagus, Sri Petaling.

Megat Mohd Aminuddin had said two men were detained but later released on police bail and that police were still investigating.

The Lamborghini was stolen after the car had been rammed by another car. Three men, one of whom was armed with a parang, drove off with the Lamborghini after the driver, a 31-year-old businessman, got down to discuss the settlement for the accident.

Lim, who is the legal counsel for the car owner, said his client had informed him about the investigating officer’s reasons for not returning the car despite having provided proof of ownership.

“The car belongs to a lady. She has shown all relevant Road Transport Department and car ownership records. Now the IO wants the owners to show proof of her financial standing because the car is loan free.”

Lim said the car, with a value of about RM800,000, had been donated by a businessman. “If the police want to investigate her financial standing, they should ask Bank Negara to probe, not instruct her verbally to submit financial statements,” he said.
