KUANTAN: Four people were injured and at least eight vehicles were damaged after a water tank atop a shopping complex here burst today, causing concrete slabs to crash on the ground.

The 1pm incident damaged motorcycles and cars that were parked along the side entrance of the mall.

The victims were believed to have been walking near the building when the incident occurred.

The sudden gush of water from the water tank on the fourth floor of the building caught people by surprise and sent those nearby scrambling for safety.

One of the victims, Sheikh Mohd Hanafi Sheikh Ali, 50, said he and his wife Norziah Abdul Ghafar, 51, were walking along the road to a nearby shopping complex when they heard a loud bang.

“I saw pieces of concrete crashing to the ground. Some of the debris and water hit us but we managed to run.

“However, we suffered some minor cuts on the knees and hands when both of us fell on the road during our attempt to escape,” he said, adding that his Modenas Kriss motorcycle was also damaged by a huge concrete slab.

Checks revealed that the Fire and Rescue Department had cordoned off the area near the building and are in the midst of removing the damaged vehicles
