ALOR SETAR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The suspected Indonesian drug mule must have thought it would be a 'shoe-in' to smuggle the party drug, syabu, using women's shoes at the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration complex last Tuesday.
The 32-year-old who was enroute to Kuala Lumpur from Hatyai, Thailand apparently overlooked one aspect.
He underestimated the Kedah Customs Department's team of enforcement officers...
The officers have a reputation for being 'spot-on' when inspecting suspicious luggage - and on that day, they smelled a rat!
About 2.30pm, they came across a suspicious image when the suspect's luggage was being scanned.
One of the bags was modified, compact and filled with footwear, four of which were women's heeled shoes in whose soles was hidden the drug, syabu. The modification of the bag also enabled packets of the drug to be concealed
The Kedah Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle in 3.329 kilogrammes of syabu worth RM632,510 at the Bukit Kayu Immigration Complex last Tuesday.
State customs director Datuk Abd Aziz Abdul Latif said an inspection of the luggage and bag led to the seizure of a total of 3.329kg of syabu worth about RM632,510 and the arrest of the man.
"The suspect claimed the shoes were presents for family members in Kuala Lumpur, and this is the first case of its kind in the state where shoes were used to smuggle drugs.
"We believe he is a drug mule and he has been remanded until Aug 12 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty, upon conviction," he told a press conference Thursday.
