BERA: All registered fishing boats and vessels eligible for subsidised diesel are required to install tracking devices to make known their whereabouts in a move to curb illegal selling of diesel at sea. Agriculture and Agro - based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said presently, several companies have come up with proposals on the costs to fix such devices. Ismail Sabri said it was timely to use such devices to track down boats and vessels at sea, adding that they could also serve as a search and rescue mechanism in cases of emergency. He said the tracking devices could serve as a global positioning system (G PS) and any “fishy” movement could be detected by the Fisheries Department. “Having the tracking devices would enable us to detect whether the vessels were in our waters or not. If there were any fishy movements at sea we would be able to follow up and act accordingly. “Our main intention is to monitor activities related to the selling of subsidised diesel,” Ismail Sabri said after he officiated the Bera Street Community Club in Simpang Kepayang. He said the selling of subsidised diesel at sea had to stop once and for all as it had cost the country billions of ringgit. Ismail Sabri said there was nothing wrong within the Ministry or other related Government agencies with regard to the procedures on subs idised diesel. “We implemented the process with the intention of reducing operating costs borne by fishermen. However, there were some who abused their subsidy by selling it at sea for fast money,” he said. Resources : The Star
