CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) must shed its image as just an enforcement unit, and become more people-friendly and provide better services to the people, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

“The old perception of JPJ enforcement officers being unapproachable should change. Meeting its officers often means getting a summons. This often portrays officers as not people-friendly,” he said.

“We want to change that. We want services at counters to be efficient,” he said at the opening of the Cameron Highlands JPJ branch office here yesterday.

Liow also said that starting July 1, a guideline for vegetable transport service operators here to modify their trucks would come into effect.

“The ministry has agreed to allow rear drawers and railings to be installed at the back of their trucks.

“Special permits will be issued to the operators and relevant stakeholders.

“This will allow operators to carry farm produce safely,” he added.

On another matter, Liow said MCA was ready to send its Crisis Relief Squad (CRSM) to Sabah to help those in need.

He said party deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong was already there to see what could be done to help in relief efforts.

Liow also said that earthquake sensors should be installed in Sabah.

“This will alert the people or climbers should an earthquake happen again,” he said.
