KUALA LUMPUR: An institute specifically designed to retrain policemen will be set up by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) this year.

JIPS director Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail said the research centre, aimed at providing adequate retraining for the cops, was expected to open in the third quarter of the year

“We will provide training modules that will serve as refresher courses covering all aspects of policing. Our main priority is integrity and quality services training, ” she said in an interview with The Star recently.

SDCP Zubaidah said the department was in the midst of selecting suitable modules to be included in the centre’s maiden year.

“We are also planning to hold the courses at the Royal Malaysia Police College, Cheras,” she said.

SDCP Zubaidah said the idea to set up the institute was mooted after the department received a string of complaints on poor delivery of service by the police.

“Among the courses that will be offered are investigation techniques and how to receive complaints. We want to delve deeper into the problem and formulate ways to tackle it.I hope that with the establishment of this institute, we are able to improve the quality of the police force,” she said.

She added that training modules by the Hong Kong police would serve as a guideline for the institute.

“The model (from Hong Kong police) will provide the foundation for the training and professional development courses.

“Their policemen are required to undergo all kinds of structured and in-depth training, including refresher programmes every time a personnel is promoted. We want to implement something similar.

“Refresher courses are important reminders on how to carry out their duties,” she said.
