IPOH: A police corporal and three others have been arrested to facilitate investigation into a shooting incident at Ladang Setiawan which left a youth in his 20s with two gunshot wounds and warded at the Manjung hospital last Saturday.

The 36-year-old cop from Sabak Bernam police headquarters in Selangor is said to have got into an argument with a group of men at the palm oil plantation at about 10pm on that day.

Perak deputy CID chief ACP Fadzil Ahmat said the policeman claimed he was assaulted by the group over a misunderstanding and subsequently several shots were fired.

The victim, a labourer from Sitiawan, suffered injuries on his abdomen and buttocks.

His condition is reported to be stable.

However, the corporal escaped unhurt.

It is believed the policeman was unloading some things from his car when the group, one armed with a pistol, approached him.

A shot was fired before a scuffle broke out.

Initial investigations revealed the policeman seized the firearm before firing two shots.

"The corporal claimed he was attacked but the group is claiming something else ... this is first hand information ... let us investigate," Fadzil said.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

The policeman and the three others aged in the 20s and 30s have been remanded for five days to assist in investigations.
