SUBSIDIES are a big part of Malaysian life – from healthcare to daily necessities like rice and cooking oil – but many are not aware of them, a Kajidata Research study found.
More than half of 1,047 Malaysians polled claimed they are unaware of the various products and assistance provided by the Government.
According to the study, only 49% are aware of subsidies and schemes that are available. Over 35% Indian and 30% Chinese respondents are not aware of them.
Calling it an unhealthy finding, the commercial and social intelligence outfit’s adviser Prof Datuk Seri Dr Syed Arabi Syed Abdullah Idid said in a statement that steps musts be taken to increase awareness to ensure the deserving groups or target groups are getting the aid they require.
However, those who are aware agreed that the Government has been helping those who need it.
For instance, 84% said they knew the Government has been extending a helping hand to the disabled, single mothers (78%), low household income group (76%) and senior citizens (76%).
On the products extended to the people, 80.7% of the respondents are aware that a bulk of the education cost is borne by the Government, followed by healthcare and public housing.
However, many feel the assistance is inadequate except for healthcare, where 59% of the respondents feel it is adequate.
About 42% said the Government has distributed assistance fairly and transparently to all states, including states governed by the opposition; some 33% remained on the fence.
