KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has tabled a Bill in Parliament to pave the way for the setting up of the long-awaited Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
The Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission Bill 2019 was tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong.
Liew informed Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof that and Bill would be read and passed at the next Parliament meeting at the end of the year.
Last September, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that the IPCMC would replace the EAIC.
The proposed IPCMC will work closely with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to weedout corruption and abuse of power in the police force.
The IPCMC is to function differently from the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).
The EAIC was set up under the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission Act 2009 and came into force in 2011 with the main function of receiving complains of misconduct from the public against enforcement officers or law enforcement agencies in general.
