The Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) Bill will be reviewed before the Perikatan Nasional (PN) cabinet makes a final decision on it.

This was announced by de facto Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Takiyuddin Hassan today.

“The cabinet decided today that the IPCMC bill is to be reviewed and refined by me and Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin.

“The result of this discussion will next be brought to the Security Cluster which is led by Senior Minister for Defence Ismail Sabri before it is brought to the cabinet for a decision,” he said in a statement on his Facebook page.

The IPCMC bill was tabled for its first reading last July during the Pakatan Harapan administration, 14 years after the initiative was mooted.

The objective of the commission is to promote integrity within the police force, investigate complaints of misconduct against the police and formulate mechanisms to detect, investigate and prevent misconduct.

It is also to advise the government on appropriate action to be taken – including formulating legislation – to promote integrity within the force.

At the time, BN MPs had urged for the bill to be postponed indefinitely.

Amidst opposition, debates for the bill were postponed twice. It was also referred to the Parliamentary Select Committee For The Consideration Of Bills for review.

Harapan had aimed to table the bill for its second and third readings in the first Dewan Rakyat sitting of the year.

However, the coalition collapsed in late February and was replaced by PN.
