KUALA LUMPUR: Two police officers were acquitted and discharged at the Sessions Court here today of soliciting RM4,000 bribe from a woman seeking the release of her husband from police custody last year.

Judge Mohd Nasir Nordin made the decision after finding that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against Assistant Superintendent S. Ravintharan, 51, and Inspector Suriati Mohd Shafie, 32.

On Sept 9, last year, the duo were jointly charged with soliciting the bribe from Nurullizean Yahya as an inducement for them to release her husband, a Cameroon national who was detained for suspected involvement in a robbery case last year.

Both of them were accused of committing the offence at the office of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Brickfields District Police headquarters between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Jan 22, 2013.

Suriati also faced a second charge of soliciting RM6,000 from Nurullizean for the same purpose at the same place at noon the same day.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Wong Poi Yoke prosecuted.

Ravintharan was represented by counsel Geethan Ram Vincent while Suriati by counsel Ebrina Zubir.
