IPOH, April 8 (Bernama) -- The audacity of it all! A random urine test left 14 policemen red-faced when they tested positive for drugs while participating in a course to enhance integrity.
The rank-and-file personnel were attending the two-day course at Ulu Kenas, in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, beginning April 6, when the test was carried out.
Similar tests were carried on other policemen attending the course nationwide but they came up with a clean slate.
A total of 87 rank-and-file policemen attended the Enhancing Integrity Course.
Perak police chief Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said initial investigations revealed the 14 policemen had used the drugs for their own consumption.
"I do not believe they shared the drugs, but it was for their own consumption.
"Based on procedure, their urine samples will be sent to the state chemistry department for analysis before initiating the necessary disciplinary action, including dismissal," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after opening the Perak Traffic Police Contingent Community Adventure Motorcycling here Tuesday.
Acryl Sani said random testing was carried as a prevention measure to check on policemen who were involved in drug abuse.
The three-day adventure motorcycling programme, beginning today, involves several areas in Ipoh, Tanjung Malim, Pengkalan Hulu, Kuala Kangsar and Manjung.
It is participated by 55 traffic policemen.
