BANGI:More enforcement agencies are expected to be put under the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC)'s purview once EAIC Act 2009 (Act 700) has been amended.
"We want to expand the list and will write to the government to put more agencies under us including the welfare department and the securities commission," he said at the EAIC dialogue with non-governmental organisations and media today.
Enforcement agencies that come under the EAIC's purview include the Police Force, Immigration Department, National Anti-Drugs Agency, Customs Department, Occupational Safety and Health Department, Civil Aviation Department and Road Transport Department. Yaacob added that proposed amendments to Act 700 were scheduled to be tabled in Parliament early of next year.
Other amendments that are made to Act 700 include making it mandatory for the disciplinary authority (conducting an internal probe within an enforcement agency) to inform EAIC of the outcome of each case and empower the commission to take part in every investigation conducted by the enforcement agencies.
Yaacob also said nearly 80 per cent of the complaints received by EAIC were made against the police. "This is understandable because police are in the frontline dealing directly with the public and their numbers are big with about 120,000 personnel. "We do receive complaints against other enforcement agencies including immigration, customs and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency," he said.
On the 2016 budget, Yaacob said the EAIC had submitted a 15-page letter to the government two days ago, appealing to the latter to consider giving the full amount of allocation it had requested. He said the commission had received a lower allocation, about 38 per cent less than what it had asked for.
