KUALA LUMPUR: The wife of N. Dharmendran, who died in police custody, was in tears when speaking about her last meeting with her husband on May 19, 2013, in a police station.
Marry Mariay Susay, 28, said Dharmendran told her to take care of their only son, who is now four years old.
"He said he will come back and told me not to be sad," said Marry at a public hearing held by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).
She said her husband spoke carefully when she asked him whether he was beaten by the police.
She said she brought Dharmendran's asthma pump to the police station on that day.
Marry said she felt "cheated" as she was not informed that her husband was under remand.
Marry said she did not know that Dharmendran was arrested by the police or that he was brought to the magistrate's court, twice, for a remand order.
Marry was speaking at the first public hearing held to ascertain if there were any police members who had committed any misconduct involving the death of Dharmanendran, who died in the police lock-up at Kuala Lumpur police headquarters on May 21, 2013.
The public hearing was chaired by Commissioners Vinayak Prabhakar Pradhan and Leong May Chan and assisted by consultants, Tan Sri Muhd Jamil Johari (former deputy Inspector-General Police) and Prof Tan Sri Dr.Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan (former EAIC commissioner).
Legal officers (conducting officers) Ahmad Razif Mohd Sidek and Eda Mazuin Abdul Rahman examined the witnesses while lawyer Eric Paulsen appeared for the victim's family and lawyer Roger Chan appeared for Bar Council.
The hearing is being held at Menara TH Perdana, Jalan Sultan Ismail.
