Members of elite police team, in full tactical gear, take down doctor in uniform on hospital grounds after tip-off on presence of robbers at food stall.

PETALING JAYA: What was meant to be a short meal break during a late shift turned out to be a most traumatic experience for a doctor based at Hospital Serdang last Friday.

Having his dinner at a food stall in the hospital parking area, the young doctor was startled when police raided the eatery, working on a tip-off that a few members of a robbery gang were also at the same location, The Sun reported.

As the cops, who were clad in black full tactical gear, balaclavas and carrying heavy firearms, surrounded the eatery, the doctor together with other hospital staff and bystanders immediately tried to flee the area.

However, he was caught and that’s when his troubles began.

Believing the men were robbers, the doctor, who is attached to the cardiology department, put up a struggle. He later wrote in his report that the men did not have any identification or even police logo on their gear.

He was then allegedly tackled to the ground, handcuffed and assaulted by the members of the elite police team who had in turn mistaken him for being one of the robbers they were after, despite him wearing the doctor’s coat with his hospital identification tag and having a stethoscope around his neck.

According to the daily, the doctor had suffered injuries following the alleged assault by the policemen, who are members of the Federal Special Task Force on Organised Crime (Stafoc).

Even the pleas of a senior doctor, who came to the scene of the arrest and vouched for the young doctor, failed to move the police to release him. He was then taken to the nearby Sri Serdang police station for interrogation.

The doctor later claimed that he was detained for hours and questioned if he had links to the robbery gang, The Sun reported.

He alleged that despite being bruised and injured from the alleged assault, his appeals to the police to let him get some treatment was rejected until they had finished questioning him some three hours later.

The doctor was taken back to Hospital Serdang and after getting the required treatment, was immediately whisked back to the police station.

His father, who happens to be a policeman attached to a district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, eventually came to Sri Serdang and helped release the young doctor on police bail at about 3am.

The doctor later made a police report on the arrest and alleged assault by the elite police team at the hospital grounds and the detention at the Sri Serdang police station.

Meanwhile, Sepang police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Ali confirmed the incident, saying that the matter is now under investigation.

“The complainant alleged that he was roughed up by members of the raiding party and the incident had brought him embarrassment.

“I can assure him that a comprehensive probe is ongoing and whoever was involved (in the case) will not be spared (of action). While the investigations are progressing, we urge the public not to make speculations about the case,” he was quoted as saying by The Sun.
